Traditional Techniques Still Appropriate For The Modern World

You might be shocked to hear that most of the trendy self-help techniques we use today aren't all that new. Every modern self-help book you've read, including Dr Norman Vincent Peale's “The Power of Positive Thinking,” is based on ideas from the past – even ancient notions.

* Yogic exercises. This self-care technique originated in Asia and has been used for millennia. Today, there are many distinct styles of Yoga practise that claim to assist everyone take care of their mind, body, and spirit.

* Praying. According to studies, praying alters brain chemistry, allowing those who pray positively to live more positive lives and feel better. Various forms of prayer have existed since the dawn of civilisation, and most certainly before. Humans have discovered ways to be happier by entrusting their troubles to a higher being.

* Mindfulness Meditation, which originated in Asian countries, has spread to many different cultures as a means to relax, focus on large topics, and try to access portions of our minds that we don't know how to access. In addition, mediation is now known to decrease blood pressure and assist those with serious conditions cope better with therapy.

* Think Positively. This may appear to be new-age, yet nothing could be further from the reality. The first to develop the concept of positive thinking was the Greek philosopher Aristotle. Positive thinking can now be found in books and television shows such as âThe Secret.î

* Acceptance of Oneself. Some people believe that everything is predetermined by fate and that our lives are predetermined by fate. To be truly joyful, you must accept the divine and govern your behaviour by self-discipline rather than attempting to control what happens.

* Self-Sufficiency. Epicurus believed that the best way to be happy is to attempt to avoid pain. And that you can do so by surrounding yourself with friends and family and experiencing as much pleasure as possible, but not in an indulgent fashion. However, we are accountable for our own pleasure, not external circumstances.

* The Golden Rule is a rule that should be followed at all times. Confucius is credited with developing the concept of treating people as you would like to be treated. Today, this is known as the Dr Phil concept: you demonstrate people how to treat you by how you treat them and yourself. You set the bar for what can be done to you and those around you.

* Self-Actualisation – The Greek philosopher Plato proposed that you should study yourself extensively to comprehend and unearth the gifts that God has given you to discover your actual purpose. Some of these concepts are covered in Rick Warren's book “The Purpose Driven Life.”

As you can see, the majority of these self-help approaches were developed long before you were born. They were just repackaged as new ideas by other authors, doctors, and theologians. Some of these self-help gurus are evasive about where their ideas came from, while others quote verbatim from old philosophers.

The Purpose Driven Life is a book of Bible study authored by Christian pastor Rick Warren that was published in 2002 by Zondervan. The book takes readers on a 40-day personal spiritual journey and presents God's five objectives for human life on Earth, according to Warren.
